The utility of Conor Bawiec '18 was on display once again this week, as he finished amongst Elmira's batting leaders while tossing a complete game on the mound. The sophomore finished second on the team with six hits and a .375 batting average and drove in a team-high five runs. He then threw all seven innings of Game 2 of the weekend series versus St. John Fisher.
In a midweek doubleheader against Medaille College, the Lebanon, PA, product finished a combined 3-for-7 with four RBIs and one run scored. He also stole a pair of bases from the Mavericks. He then went 2-for-4 with a double in the Empire 8 Conference opener on Friday against the Cardinals. Bawiec opened Saturday's doubleheader by giving up two earned runs in seven full innings of work, equaling a 2.57 ERA. At the plate, he extended his career-long hit streak to 22 games by going 1-for-3 and plating one EC run. Despite having his hit streak snapped in the series finale, Bawiec drew a walk off of Cardinals' starting pitcher Marc Iseneker, extending his active on-base streak to 24 games.
Through the first 14 games of the 2016 campaign, Bawiec ranks third in the Empire 8 in batting average (.417), fourth in stolen bases (5), fifth in on-base percentage (.472), and eighth in hits (20). Additionally, his 24.1 innings pitched pace the Purple and Gold.
The Elmira baseball team will return to action on Thursday, April 31st, with a twin-bill at historic Dunn Field against Hilbert College. First pitch for Game 1 is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
