After an extended layoff, Theo Tran '20 performed admirably as the men's tennis team avenged its fall loss to Oswego State with a 7-2 triumph over the Lakers on Saturday at the Murray Athletic Center. The victory was not only EC's first of the season, but it ended a three-match skid for the Soaring Eagles.
A native of Houston, Texas, Tran cleaned up at first singles and at first doubles, sweeping both matches for the first time in his young career. After teaming up withÂ
Patrick Tracey '18 to knock off Oswego's top duo of John Stanford and Dillon McDonald by an unblemished 8-0 score, Tran dispatched Stanford in a close three-set bout at the No. 1 singles flight. He overcame an early 4-6 loss in the first set to even the match with a 6-2 triumph in the second. He then cruised to a 10-2 win in the super tiebreaker to complete the comeback.
For Tran, Saturday's singles victory marked the first of his collegiate career, while the six-foot-tall netter has pieced together a two-match win streak with Tracey at first doubles.
The Elmira men will hit the road for the first time this spring on Friday, March 17, to square off against the Wildcats of Pennsylvania College of Technology. The non-conference match in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, will begin at 4:00 p.m.
