The No. 4/5 Soaring Eagles handed the Lakers of Oswego State their first loss of the young season on their own ice at the Marano Campus Center Arena, thanks in part to the early offense generated by Sarah Hughson '18. The East Haddam, Connecticut, native tallied the first two goals of the game at the 4:04 and 7:51 marks of the opening period. Then with the Purple and Gold leading 3-0 late in the third period, she completed her hat trick with her third goal, a new career high for the senior forward. Hughson's first and final goals were both recorded on the power play, also a new single-game best.
Hughson is the first Soaring Eagle to register a hat trick since teammate Maddie Evangelous '19 did so on January 17, 2017, against Williams. Through Elmira's first weekend of the 2017-18 season, she leads all Division III skaters in goals per game (3.00) and ranks third in the nation in points per game (3.00).
The EC women's ice hockey team will continue its season-opening road trip with back-to-back games against King's (Pa.) on Saturday, November 11, and Sunday, November 12, at the Revolution Ice Centre in Pittston, Pennsylvania. Puck drop for both UCHC contests is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
