McKenzie Slaven '20 was effective on both sides of the ball in EC's six games last week. In the pitching circle, the right-handed hurler posted a 1-2 record with a 3.15 ERA and 11 strikeouts in a trio of complete games. In her first appearance, Slaven allowed four runs and struck out three in a tight 4-2 setback to Utica College on Wednesday. Then against Nazareth on Saturday, she struck out five hitters and allowed three earned in 7.0 innings to guide the Soaring Eagles to a thrilling 6-5 victory over the Golden Flyers. Slaven then went 7.0 innings and struck out three against No. 15 St. John Fisher College on Sunday.
At the dish, Slaven finished tied for the team lead with five hits and three RBIs to go along with a solid .313 batting average. The local product of nearby Horseheads, New York, posted a hit in all but one of the five games that she received a plate appearance. The highlight of her week at the plate came in the second game against the Golden Flyers, where she hit the second double of her career and she drove in a game-high three RBIs.
For the season, Slaven leads the team in ERA (3.29), strikeouts (28) and wins (3). At the plate, she is fourth with a .292 batting average (7-for-24). The multi-faceted utility player has also posted 4 RBIs, three runs and two doubles in her first collegiate season.
The Soaring Eagles will take a break from conference play to battle Lycoming College on Tuesday, April 24, at Eldridge Park Stadium. The opening bout of the twin bill is slated for a 3:00 p.m. start.
