In his second-to-last week donning the Purple and Gold, Nick Sampogna '18 had a fantastic week hitting the ball, going 7-for-21 (.333) with eight runs, seven RBIs and three doubles. To begin the week, he tallied one hit with two runs and one RBI in Elmira's exciting 18-10 victory over Wells College on Tuesday, April 24. In the series opener against the Roos on Saturday, Sampogna went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored while pulling double duty as the team's starting pitcher. On the mound, he struck out four in 5.0 innings. On senior weekend, the Verplanck, New York, native helped guide the Soaring Eagles to a pair of victories over SUNY Canton on Sunday, April 29. In the first game of the doubleheader, he went 3-for-4 with single-game career-highs with four RBIs and three runs to go along with one home run, the second of his career.
Although he's best known for his work as a pitcher, Sampogna has carved out a spot playing right field in recent weeks. On the season, he owns a .257 batting average (9-for-35) with 12 runs scored, nine RBIs, four doubles and one homer. The utility player has shown his power this season, as he maintains a stellar .457 slugging percentage. As a pitcher, Sampogna has recorded 14 strikeouts in 21.0 innings pitched.
The Soaring Eagles wind down the 2018 campaign this week with a trio of games. The first of the three bouts will be against Alfred State College on Tuesday, May 1, at 3:00 p.m. in Alfred, New York.
