Nick Cottone '19 was honored for the second time this season after making his second start on the mound against No. 20 nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins University on Saturday afternoon. The right-handed senior tossed another gem, putting a scare into the Blue Jays, although the hosts held on to win in extra innings, 3-2.
The Toms River, New Jersey, native pounded the strike zone all afternoon and established a new program single-game record by striking out 11 batters. In 7.0 innings of work – the second-longest outing of his career – he threw 107 pitches and allowed just two runs (one earned) on two hits and one walk. Cottone carried a no-hitter into the fourth and struck out two batters in four separate innings.
In the no-decision against the 20th-ranked Blue Jays, Cottone lowered his season earned-run average (1.38), batting average against (0.87), and WHIP (0.69), while increasing his team lead in both innings (13.0) and strikeouts (15).
Cottone will likely toe the rubber again this weekend, as the EC baseball team heads to the Flower City for a doubleheader against the University of Rochester on Saturday, March 16. The opening game of the series is slated to begin at 12:00 p.m.
