On the turf, Sam Shaw '22 has quickly developed into the go-to option in the offensive zone for the EC men's lacrosse team. The first-year attackman from Portland, Maine, amassed a team-high nine points on nine goals in three non-conference games last week, including a trio of man-up goals and the game-winner on Wednesday against Wells.
Shaw found the back of the net twice on Monday night against Hilbert, the outing second multi-goal of his young career. The rookie then exploded for a season-best six goals two days later on the road against Wells, leading the Purple and Gold to their first win of the year by a 9-8 final score. Shaw completed his hat trick with a man-up goal at the 14:21 mark of the third quarter, before breaking an 8-all tie with the game-winning tally at 7:40 in the final quarter. His week concluded with one goal and three ground balls on Saturday afternoon against SUNY Oneonta.
With 13 goals, Shaw leads Elmira through his first five collegiate games. He ranks ninth in the Empire 8 Conference with 2.60 goals per game and only needs two more goals to surpass the team's leading scorer from all of last season.
Shaw and the Soaring Eagles are back in action on Wednesday, March 20, when they host Keystone College at Notre Dame High School at 7:00 p.m.
