Strong First Half Propels Women’s Lacrosse to Victory

Ithaca, NYThe Women's Lacrosse team picked up their third win of the 2011 spring season as they bettered the Express of Wells College, 19-9. EC controlled the game as they had the edge in shots, ground-balls, turnovers, and draw controls.

Elmira jumped out to a 3-0 lead as Lindsay Mitchell '12 (Arnold, MD -- Arnold) scored two of her four goals in the first 10 minutes of action.  Wells would answer back with two goals of the own, bringing the Express to within one of the Soaring Eagles. 

EC would score 6 unanswered goals to take a 7 goal lead.  Credit Meghan Pass '12 (Owego, NY -- Owego Free Academy) as she led the Elmira charge with three goals during the six goal stretch.  Both teams would conclude the first half by scoring three goals a piece, bringing the halftime score to 12-5 in favor of the Purple and Gold. 

The second half would be more competitive but Elmira would again get the better of Wells, outscoring them 7-to-4.  Six different players scored for Elmira in the half, Jordan Donegan '12 (Syracuse, NY -- Corcoran) was the only Soaring Eagle to score twice in the half. 

Elmira goalies Mary-Kate Gellerman '13 (Frederick, MD -- Urbana) and LeAnna Presler '14 (Livonia, NY -- Livonia) split time in net.  Gellerman picked up the win by making one save in the first half while Presler made 5 saves in the second. 

Collette O'Brien '13 (Binghamton, NY -- Seton Catholic) and Pass led all Elmira scorers.  O'Brien totaled 6 points on 2 goals and 4 assists while Pass scored 4 goals and assisted on another 2.  Fourth year standout Sarah Ware '11 (Georgetown, MA -- Marquette) netted 3 goals while collecting 3 ground balls and controlling 9 draws. 

EC Women's Lacrosse will be back in action tomorrow as they travel to take on Marywood University.  Game-time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
