Elmira, NY -- With the sun finally shinning the Women's Lacrosse team hosted the Golden Flyers of Nazareth College in Empire 8 action. EC was looking for their second straight E8 win but came up just short as Nazareth nipped the Soaring Eagles 13-11.
EC opened play in the first half by scoring three straight goals in the first 14 minutes of play. Jordan Donegan '12 (Syracuse, NY -- Corcoran) scored Elmira's first goal just 5:40 into the contest on an assist from classmate Lindsay Mitchell '12 (Arnold, MD -- Arnold). At the 18:10 mark Meghan Pass '12 (Owego, NY -- Owego Free Academy) scored on a free position shot and just under two minutes later Mitchell would score EC's third goal while Donegan picked up the assist.
At the 14:01 mark Nazareth would get on the board with a free position goal but Elmira's Marki Michaels '13 (Manchester, NY -- Midlakes) responded with a goal 50 seconds later. Donegan would pick up another assist giving her three points in the half. Pass would net another goal at the 11:02 mark, pushing the Elmira lead to four.
Nazareth would make it 5-2 on a goal from Alyssa Johnston '13. With the half coming to a close, EC's Samantha Risi '14 (Coopersburg, PA -- Southern Lehigh) netted a goal with just two seconds remaining to send Elmira into the half ahead 6-2.
To open the second half of play each team would tally a goal brining the score to 7-3. The Golden Flyers would string together 8 unanswered goals over a 16 minute stretch to take an 11-7 lead. EC would put an end to their scoring drought as Pass scored back-to-back goals, trimming the Nazareth lead to 2. Both teams would trade two goals as the game ended 13-11 in favor of the Golden Flyers.
Mary-Kate Gellerman '13 (Frederick, MD -- Urbana) made 11 saves in 60 minutes of play. Elmira's record now stands at 5-8 overall and 2-6 in the Empire 8. EC will be back on the field on Tuesday, April 26th as they host the Blue Devils of Fredonia State in a non-conference game. Game-time is set for 4:00 p.m.
