Fredonia, NY – The Elmira College Women's Lacrosse team could not overcome an early deficit on the road as it fell, 16-5, to host Fredonia State Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Devils, who have been receiving votes in the IWLCA D-III poll each of the last two weeks, improve to 13-3 overall which is a school record for wins in a season. The loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 7-8 overall.
Fredonia got off to a quick 5-0 start early before
Marissa Mongillo '15 (Shelton, CT -- Trumbull) scored EC's first goal at the 12:22 mark of the first half. After an
Emma Schepers '13 (Elmvale, ONT -- Team Ontario) marker the Blue Devils took a 12-2 advantage into the half.
Schepers tallied her second score out of halftime and
Jessica Blinkinsop '14 (Temecula, CA -- Great Oak) registered EC's final two goals.
Schepers led the Soaring Eagle attack with two goals and an assist, while
Blinkinsop found the back of the net twice and recorded three ground balls.
Mongillo added a goal and an assist, while
Marki Michaels '13 (Manchester, NY -- Midlakes) earned three draw controls and dished out one helper.
Mary Kate Gellerman '13 (Frederick, MD -- Urbana) played the first 35 minutes between the pipes for the Purple and Gold making 10 saves and recording five ground balls.
LeAnna Presler '14 (Livonia, NY -- Livonia) went the final 25 minutes in net for EC, stopping four shots.
The EC Women's Lacrosse team returns to action Saturday at noon when it hosts Alfred University. The Men's Lacrosse team will also play as a part of a doubleheader with its contest starting at 3:00 p.m. against Nazareth College. Both games will be played at Campus Field.
