Elmira, NY – The EC Women's Lacrosse team had 10 different players score at least one goal in a 21-8 victory over SUNY Canton Sunday afternoon at the Elmira Free Academy Field. The Soaring Eagles improve to 2-1, while the Kangaroos fall to 0-1 at the start of the season.
The Soaring Eagles started off well with
Marki Michaels '13, Jessica Blinkinsop '14 and
Emma Schepers '13 each scoring a goal within the first eight minutes of the game. The Kangaroos responded with two goals of their own only a minute apart to bring it to 3-2 with 21 minutes left in the half. Midway through the first half EC extended its lead to 5-2 with scores from
Gretchen Smith '15 and
Rebecca Matturro '14. After a score by Canton to narrow down the lead
Matturro came through for another score to make it 6-3 with
Rory Donahue '14 assisting on the goal. Canton responded with a goal a little over a minute later, but EC controlled the rest of the half with
Michaels, Moorea Spoljaric '16 and
Bridget Keefe '14 each recording goals to make it 9-4 going into the break.
Although Canton was able to hang in for the first half the Soaring Eagles were able to step it up early and control the tempo in the second half.
Blinkinsop went to work on the draw controls winning four straight, while
Smith recorded two straight goals and
Spoljaric registered her second goal. The Kangaroos would fight hard recording four more goals in the game, but the EC offense kept their momentum going throughout the half.
Spoljaric, Schepers, Donahue, Michaels, Blinkinsop and
Hannah Rafalowski-Houseman '16 each registered at least one goal in the half to help EC prevail 21-8.
The Soaring Eagles held advantages over the Kangaroos in shots, ground balls, draw control wins and clears.
LeAnna Presler '14 earned another victory on the season making four saves, while Alyssa Altschuler suffered the loss making 10 saves in the game.
The Purple and Gold will return to action Wednesday, March 20 when they hit the road to take on the University of Rochester in non-conference action. Game is set to start at 4:00 p.m.
