Elmira, NY – The EC Women's lacrosse team battled well and held off the Mustangs of Morrisville State College in a nail biting finish, 12-9, on Saturday afternoon at the Elmira Free Academy Field. The Soaring Eagles improve to 1-1, while the Mustangs fall to 0-2 to start the season.
The Soaring Eagles started off strong scoring the first three goals of the game with
Moorea Spoljaric '16 scoring two and
Marki Michaels '13 scoring one. The Mustangs were able to fight and finally get on the board at the 21:19 and 17:48 marks to make it 3-2. EC was able to go right back to work on the offensive side with
Emma Schepers '13 registering two goals and
Michaels registering another goal all within the 15 minute mark to make it 6-2. Morrisville came back once again to record two more goals and make it 6-4 at the 12:28 mark.
Gretchen Smith '15 was able to step up for the offense and extend EC's lead to 7-4 at the 12:09 mark, but it would be the last score before the half.
In the second half
Spoljaric, Schepers and
Michaels continued to control the EC offense. However, the Mustangs did not give up being led by Sybil Stanton and Shelby Wood eventually cutting into an EC four goal lead. After a Stanton goal to make it 11-9 with 1:49 left in play
LeAnna Presler '14 made two huge stops and passed it up to
Spoljaric who sprinted down the field eventually scored the security goal for the Soaring Eagles.
The Soaring Eagles held advantages over the Mustangs in shots (28-20), ground balls (38-32), and draw control wins (14-9).
Spoljaric led the pack scoring five goals and earning six draw control wins.
Schepers followed with three goals, two assists, and four ground balls, while
Michaels recorded three goals and six ground balls.
Presler earned her first victory on the season making eight saves. Caitlin Dunphy and Veronique Krohn split time in net for the Mustangs. Dunphy played the first 40 minutes recording 11 saves, while Krohn finished the last 20 minutes recording one save.
The Purple and Gold will return to action tomorrow when it faces SUNY Canton at 1:00 p.m. at Elmira Free Academy Field.
