Scranton, PA – The Elmira College Women's Lacrosse team played even with host University of Scranton in the second half, but was outscored 11-1 in the first frame as they fell, 15-5, Tuesday evening at Fitzpatrick Field. The win improves the Royals to 7-5, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 6-6.
Elmira got on the board first 2:16 in when
Ashton Hogan '15 tallied her 14th marker of the year. From that point on the hosts controlled play as they rattled off 11 straight scores. Kerry Sullivan led the Royal attack as she netted four goals in the spurt, including the final three of the half as Scranton led 11-1 at intermission.
The Soaring Eagles played with increased intensity out of break as
Hogan netted back-to-back goals off passes from
Gretchen Smith '15 and
Jessica Blinkinsop '14.
Smith then tallied an unassisted marker to get EC within 11-4.
Despite the strong start to the second stanza Scranton rattled off four straight scores to thwart any comeback attempt.
Deirdre McCluskey '16 fed
Natalie Robinson '15 who found the back of the net with 55 seconds remaining to round out the scoring on the day for Elmira.
Laura Bartus '13 had a tremendous game defensively finishing with game-highs of six ground balls and five caused turnovers.
Laura Powell '16 and
Erin Duffy '14 tallied four ground balls apiece.
Mary Kate Gellerman '13 made the start in net for Elmira stopping seven shots in the loss, while
LeAnna Presler '14 replaced her making three saves. Kathleen Smart earned the win for the Royals making four saves, while Emily Towey stopped three shots in relief.
The Women's Lacrosse team returns to action Friday and Saturday when it has a pair of important road conference tilts at Ithaca and Utica beginning at 4:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m., respectively.
