Strong Start Not Enough as Women’s Lax Falls to Fredonia

Box Score

Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Women's Lacrosse team put together a strong first half leading undefeated Fredonia 4-3 at halftime, but it was not enough as they fell, 10-5, Tuesday afternoon at Campus Field. The win improves the Blue Devils to 8-0, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 4-4.

Elmira got off to a great start winning the opening draw control as Ashton Hogan '15 found the back of the net on an unassisted goal just 42 seconds into the contest. The teams then traded three goals in the remainder of the opening half. Marki Michaels '13 beat the goaltender off a feed from Hogan and then Jessica Blinkinsop '14 scored a goal to make it 3-2 with just less than 10 minutes remaining. After a Fredonia goal, Gretchen Smith '15 made a great play feeding Laura Powell '16 for her first collegiate goal as EC took a 4-3 edge into intermission.

The second half proved to be all Blue Devils as Fredonia rattled off seven straight scores from six different players to take a commanding 10-4 lead with just more than three minutes remaining. It was not until 53 seconds remaining in the second frame that the Soaring Eagles scored their first goal of the half when Michaels assisted a Hogan goal.

Fredonia held advantages in shots on goal (25-9), ground balls (33-22) and draw controls (9-8). Elmira turned the ball over 37 times which proved to be costly, while the Blue Devils gave away 25 possessions. Mary Kate Gellerman '13 stopped 15 shots for Elmira, while Casey Chiesa made four saves for Fredonia.

Hogan led Elmira with two goals, an assist and three draw controls, while Michaels contributed a goal and assist. Katie Glagolev paced all scorers with three goals for the Blue Devils. Laura Bartus '13 had a strong game for EC finishing with four ground balls and four caused turnovers.

The Women's Lacrosse team returns to action this weekend when it hosts a pair of Empire 8 conference foes on Campus Field in Elmira. The Soaring Eagles take on Stevens Institute of Technology Saturday at 12:00 p.m. and Hartwick College Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
