Hogan Nets Five as Women's Lacrosse Defeats Houghton 15-8

Box Score

Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College women's lacrosse team (3-3) had seven players get into the scoring column as the Soaring Eagles cruised to a 15-8 victory over Houghton College (2-4). Ashton Hogan '15 had five of EC's 15 goals, giving her nine total in her last two games.

Elmira had no issues scoring in the first half as the Purple and Gold would put nine goals on the scoreboard in the first 30 minutes of play. Rebecca Matturo'14 got things started six minutes into the game with her sixth goal of the season. Houghton tied the game at one a few minutes later, but back-to-back goals from Hogan ignited a 5-0 EC run to put the Soaring Eagles on top 6-1.

The Highlanders would score two goals, separated by just 34 seconds, to make it a three-goal game, but that would be as close as Houghton would get as the Soaring Eagle offense recaptured their scoring touch down the stretch. Hogan would net her third and fourth goals of the half, which bookended a Marissa Mongillo '15 goal to put Elmira in front 9-4 after the first half of play.

The Soaring Eagles wasted little time increasing their lead even further as Hogan, Kelsey Quail '17, and Moorea Spoljaric '16 each scored within the first five minutes of the second half to make it a 12-4 game. From there, the Purple and Gold began to slow their pace, focusing more on ball-control and stopping Houghton's attack.

Spoljaric would trade goals with Houghton's Jennifer Zacchigna and Amanda Zacchigna to maintain Elmira's eight-goal lead as the clock ticked below 15 minutes to play. Sami Risi '14 would close out EC's scoring with her third goal of the season. Houghton would net two goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation to bring it to the 15-8 final score.

Joining Hogan with multiple goals on the afternoon were Spoljaric, who had three, Matturo, and Quail, who had two apiece. LeAnna Presler '14 played just over 43 minutes in the net, making seven saves while allowing just six goals in the win. Lindsay Wargo '17 came on in relief, her first appearance this season, and made three saves while allowing the other two goals.

The Soaring Eagles hit the road for the first time in two weeks when EC travels to nearby Ithaca College on Tuesday, March 25th for Elmira's first Empire 8 Conference matchup. The game is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.
