Women’s Lacrosse Comeback Falls Short In Overtime

Morrisville, NY -- Despite forcing an overtime period, the Elmira College women's lacrosse team (1-1) fell 14-13 to Morrisville State College (1-1) today.  Moorea Spoljaric '16 led the Soaring Eagles in today's game with four goals, three ground balls, two draw controls, one assist.
 
Also finishing the day with a well-rounded performances was Rebecca Matturro '14 and Jessica Blinkinsop '14. Matturro picked up five ground balls, won four draw controls, netted three goals, and a caused one turnover while Blinkinsop finished the day with two goals, two assists, two draw controls, and one ground ball.
 
EC found the scoreboard first, just 1:57 into the game, when Matturro received a pass from Blinkinsop and put the ball in the back of the net. The Mustangs of Morrisville responded with two straight goals to take the 2-1 lead 2:58 into the first half. The Purple and Gold tied the game back up 4:28 later when Spoljaric slipped the ball past the Mustangs netminder. The Mustangs retook the lead 1:58 later, but Elmira tied the game up with 15:15 left in the half after Kelsey Quail '17 scored her third goal of the season, unassisted. Just three minutes later Spoljaric tallied her second goal of the game to give EC the 4-3 lead. The Mustangs responded with tying the game up 10 seconds later. Spoljaric netted her third goal of the game with 6:30 left in the half while Blinkinsop upped EC's lead to 7-4 after netting back-to-back unassissted goals one minute apart. Morrisville scored one more time with a minute left to trail Elmira, 5-7.
 
Matturro tallied her second goal of the day 1:06 seconds into the second half with Bridget Keefe '14 being credited with the assist on the play. The Mustangs scored their sixth goal of the game 6:02 into the half, but Matturro gave the Soaring Eagles their biggest lead of the game, 9-6, just 1:05 later. Morrisville responded with five straight goals to take an 11-9 lead, with only 7:14 left in the second half.  EC went right to work as Keefe netted a goal 19 seconds later off a pass from Blinkinsop and took advantage of a man-up advantage when Spoljaric tossed the ball to Sam Risi '14 who tied the game up at 11-11 with 11:30 left in the second half. However, less than a minute later Morrisville took a 12-11 lead that would hold until Spoljaric tied the game up at 12-12 with 43 seconds left in the half.  As the time expired in regulation play, both teams would head into an overtime period.
 
The Mustangs scored the first two goals of the overtime period to take a 14-12 lead with 3:56 left. As EC went in desperation mode, Keefe scored her second goal of the game off a man-up opportunity with 18 seconds left. The Soaring Eagles ran out of time to complete the comeback win.

The Purple and Gold will compete next when they host the University of Scranton on March 12th. The game is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
