Hogan and Spoljaric Combine for 12 Goals as Women's Lacrosse Downs Alfred

Box Score

Alfred, NY -- The Elmira College women's lacrosse (5-8, 2-3 E8) team's offense was firing on all cylinders this afternoon as the Soaring Eagles defeated Alfred University (1-7, 0-5 E8) 16-5. Ashton Hogan '15 set a new career-high with seven goals scored while Moorea Spoljaric '16 established a new career-high with eight points, coming in the form of five goals and three assists.

Hogan, who was named the Empire 8 Player of the Week on Monday, also added an assist in today's game giving her a career-high eight points against the Saxons. Joining Hogan and Spoljaric in the scoring column were Kylie Connell '17, who scored twice, Sami Risi '14, and Bridget Keefe '14.

Spoljaric and Hogan opened the first half with back-to-back goals in the first five minutes of play to give the Soaring Eagles a 2-0 lead, but Alfred would make it a one-goal game just 36 seconds later. It took several minutes for either team to register their next goal, but after Hogan found the back of the net with 19:17 to play in the first half, EC rattled off three additional unanswered goals, one each from Hogan, Risi, and Spoljaric, to break open a 6-1 advantage.

Alfred's Kaitlyn Button, who scored the Saxons' first goal of the half, would help Alfred break through the smothering EC defense to complete her hat trick and make it a 6-3 game with 5:43 to play in the opening half. But Keefe would answer for the Soaring Eagles just before halftime with her third goal of the season, giving the Purple and Gold a 7-3 halftime lead.

The Saxons got the first score of the second half as Janelle Gallipeau slipped a shot past EC goaltender LeAnna Presler '14 2:14 in, but the Soaring Eagle defense would shut down Alfred's offense for the next 24 minutes as Elmira's offense took control of the game. Hogan would score three straight goals, and four of EC's next six overall, to complete her seven-goal effort. Spoljaric would net the other two in that six-goal stretch, which spanned about eight minutes of game time, helping the Purple and Gold advance their lead to 13-4.

Connell, after assisting on the first Elmira goal of the afternoon, would get in on the scoring action with her first goal of the day at the 14:50 mark which was followed by Spoljaric's fifth goal just two minutes later. Connell then wrapped-up EC's scoring with 10:57 to play with her second goal to put the Soaring Eagles ahead 16-4. Alfred would add one more goal to their final tally before the final horn sounded as the Purple and Gold would cruise to the 16-5 victory.

Presler made four saves in over 46 minutes of action to pick up her fifth victory of the year while Lindsay Wargo '17 recorded one save in her 13-plus minutes in the net.

The Soaring Eagles will be back in action tomorrow, April 19th when they travel to Nazareth College for another Empire 8 Conference matchup. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
