Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Women's Lacrosse team suffered a tough conference loss to St. John Fisher College 16-6 Saturday afternoon on Campus Field. The win improves the Cardinals to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in Empire 8 action, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 6-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Both teams came out ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. The Cardinals jumped out to an early 3-0 lead halfway in, but EC responded back later scoring two goals from
Meghan Pass '12 (Owego, NY -- Owego Free Academy) and
Marissa Mongillo '15 (Shelton, CT -- Trumbull). However the Cardinals dominated the rest of the half scoring four more times to make it 7-2 going into halftime.
In the second half St. John Fisher went back to work taking control of the game. EC got its chances in the middle and end of the second half, but it was not enough to take down a vicious Fisher offense.
Pass led the Soaring Eagles in scoring with four goals, one assist and picked up four ground balls. Also contributing to the offense were
Mongillo, Lindsay Mitchell '12 (Arnold, MD -- Arnold) and
Emma Schepers '13 (Elmvale, ONT -- Team Ontario).
Mongillo recorded a goal and two ground balls, while
Mitchell tallied an assist and five ground balls and
Schepers registered a goal as well as a ground ball. On the defensive end
Rebecca Matturro '14 (Smithtown, NY -- Smithtown), Laura Bartus '13 (Suffield, CT -- Williston Northampton) and
Marissa Drake '12 (Schenectady, NY -- Schenectady) each caused two turnovers, while also picking up at least one ground ball.
Mary Kate Gellerman '13 (Fredrick, MD -- Urbana) and
LeAnna Presler '14 (Livonia, NY -- Livonia) split time in net for EC recording four saves apiece.
The EC Women's Lacrosse team returns to action Friday, March 6
th when it takes on conference power Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ starting at 4:00 p.m.
