After being held scoreless through the first six games of the season, Jarryd ten Vaanholt '16 broke through with two goals, two assists and four points in wins over No. 6 Amherst College, 6-3, and No. 3 Babson College, 5-3, at the Murray Athletic Center Ice Arena. Against the Lord Jeffs, ten Vaanholt earned the primary assist on both goals scored by Alexander Taulien '17. Taulien's first tally at 17:39 in the second period gave the Purple and Gold a 3-0 advantage, and his second goal at 10:57 in the third made it 5-2.
The West Vancouver, BC, native then scored twice against the Beavers, his first multi-goal game since December 6, 2014. The 2014-15 American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) All-American selection scored his first goal of the season at the 2:11 mark in the second period on the power play. ten Vaanholt then scored the game-winning goal at 4:18 of the third period.
Following the weekend sweep, Elmira men's hockey team is now on a three-game win streak and all three of those victories have come against nationally-ranked opponents. Additionally, with the Beavers ranked third in the nation entering the weekend, Babson is the highest ranked opponent EC has upset since it knocked off then-No. 1 Oswego State on October 26, 2007.
The EC men's hockey team will conclude its five-game homestand on Tuesday, December 8th, at 7:00 p.m., when the Soaring Eagles host SUNY Potsdam in non-conference action.
