Hayden Rothenberg '17 was on a tear last week, recording multiple hits in all five contests for the Soaring Eagles, the longest consecutive-game multi-hit streak of his Elmira career. He finished with an impeccable .524 batting average after leading the team with 11 hits in 21 at-bats. The fleet-footed center fielder also swiped a team-best five bases.
The Myrtle Beach, SC, native began his recent run of hot play at the plate by going 2-for-4 with a run scored and one driven in to help the Purple and Gold beat the Pennsylvania College of Technology on April 27th. The following afternoon at Alfred State College, Rothenberg went 2-for-5 with a run scored.
Rothenberg collected two more hits in a big Empire 8 Conference win over Utica College on April 29th. He also walked, stole second, and came around to score on a base hit as part of a huge seven-run third inning. In a doubleheader on the 30th against SUNY Canton, he clubbed at a .714 clip (5-for-7), recording a trio of hits, two runs scored and two stolen bases in game one against the 'Roos. In the nightcap, he went 2-for-4 with a double, one run and one RBI, while stealing another pair of bags.
In his second season with the Soaring Eagles, Rothenberg is batting .331 out of the leadoff spot. He's third on the team with 41 hits and second with nine two-baggers. The speedster also paces EC with 13 stolen bases.
The Elmira baseball team will celebrate Class of 2016 Recognition Day against the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford at historic Dunn Field on Tuesday, May 3rd, at 7:00 p.m.
