On the diamond, Mckenzie Slaven '20 did it all in a pair of Empire 8 doubleheaders against Stevens Institute of Technology and The Sage Colleges. The local standout from Horseheads, New York, was one of six Soaring Eagles to bat above .300 over the weekend, as she posted four hits in 11 at-bats (.364) with three RBIs and two runs scored. In the pitcher's circle, Slaven struck out 13 with a 2.00 ERA and held opponents to a mere .204 batting average.
Slaven allowed only one earned run in a complete-game loss against Stevens on Saturday, but responded for her fifth win of the year by striking out eight in a 7-3 victory over the Gators. She also raked against Sage, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs in the early game and 2-for-4 with two runs scored in a 12-4 triumph in the nightcap.
With 53 strikeouts on the season, Slaven ranks fourth in the E8. She also compiled her 100th career strikeout against Sage, joining former teammate Katie McDougal '18 as the latest Soaring Eagles to achieve the feat. With just seven more strikeouts, Slaven will crack Elmira's all-time top-10 leaderboard.
Slaven and the EC softball team will hit the road for a twin bill on Wednesday, April 17, against the Pioneers of Alfred State College. First pitch for the series opener is at 3:00 p.m.
